Nutana Notable Neighbours 2019

We really love this neighbourhood, and it is mostly the great people living in it that make it so wonderful. Meet this year’s Notable Neighbours.

Janet Jobe

In the words of her nominator – Janet is an amazing, thoughtful, kind, loving neighbour with a heart of gold, who gives generously of her time to help those around her.  Janet was nominated by Lois Beggs whom she takes to medical appointments, emergency hospital visits, and stays with her, often for hours.  Lois calls Janet her “earthly angel”. Way to go Janet!

Dave Desanghere

Dave received a couple nominations for this award this year which speaks to what Dave has done for our neighbourhood.  Dave has revolutionized the rink at the Victoria School.  He spearheaded the project that saw the installation of board, the incorporation of a warm up shack, having a Zamboni, and putting the Zamboni in his garage instead of his car.  It has been a personal joy for me to see Dave come to meetings with plans for fundraising for the rink and being able to support those plans as the Nutana Community Association and assisting him even a little in what he saw as the potential for the rink.  One of the nominations for Dave called him a FORCE and we are honoured to have that force in our community.

Arla Gustafson

Arla has enriched our community of Saskatoon and the Nutana community.  It is for this enrichment that she was nominated this evening.  Arla has been a part of the United Way and many other foundations throughout Saskatoon.  It is with this persistence and hard work that the Albert Rec Unit got a boost that will allow the full park plan to be realized with the build going forward later this year.  We as the NCA have benefited from her dedication to the rebuild of the Albert Rec Unit Project.

Garth Bent

Ice. It’s a big part of our lives in this city for half of the year.  Garth is ice’s worst nightmare.  Every spring Garth patrols his block with an ice chipper to keep melt water flowing through the storm drain.  His commitment to kicking ice to the curb ensures that sidewalks are clear and dry, people on his block are safer, and that puddles are not a part of that block’s world.

Jake Buhler

Jake’s nomination calls him the “connector of neighbours”.  Jake is all about connections and networks.  Jake knows everyone and everyone knows Jake.  If you ever move to his area he will get to know you and he will make sure that you are welcomed.  Jake volunteers at community events, help people with building projects, assisted people with gardens and snow shoveling, and befriended those in need.  Even through some tough times for himself he hasn’t slowed down and continues to be that connection or people and that support that people need.

Myrtle Harrington

Nutana Community Gardens and Myrtle Harrington were synonymous for many years.  Myrtle was the garden coordinator for several years and she not only led the gardens but she could be seen in the gardens several times a week ensuring that projects were underway, gardeners could ask questions, and helping out wherever she could.  Even last year, she did not even have a plot but she was there lending a hand and providing your knowledge and ideas for gardeners who may have been just starting out.  Myrtle, thank you again for your time and commitment to the gardens, your neighbourhood, and your fellow gardeners.
