Compost Coach Training Session:
Know someone who wants to join the team?
Happy 2017, Compost Coaches!
Our team of volunteers does a lot of great work promoting backyard composting and other sustainable yard care practices in Saskatoon. That’s why I am excited to say that we are getting ready to train a new cohort! 2017’s Compost Coach training camp will take place March 4th & 5th, and everyone from Saskatoon is welcome.
Can you help spread the word? If you know someone with a green thumb and a yearning for learning, nudge them in our direction! Just tell them to contact compost@swrc.ca with any questions.
Here is some more information on this year’s training camp:
About us: The Compost Coach program is sponsored by the City of Saskatoon and facilitated by the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council. We are a team of compost volunteers and enthusiasts that share our composting knowledge with the public at Saskatoon events, workshops, and small group presentations.
About what to expect in the course: Through lectures and hands-on practice, registrants will learn about soil biology, techniques and troubleshooting for traditional composting, vermicomposting, bokashi fermentation, grasscycling, and compost tea. We will also cover how to answer common questions, give presentations, and lead simple composting demonstrations.
About cost: Registration costs $100 and includes a textbook and course manual. Reduced cost options are available for low income participants. We will reimburse these fees when a participant completes 12 volunteer hours in Saskatoon within one year of their training. Volunteer hours could include: staffing composting displays at community events, leading presentations, working with a community garden, or giving one-on-one home visits. These volunteer opportunities are coordinated through the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council.
About course space: Space is limited, so make sure people sign up fast if they want to get in!
